Trampoline broke the internet! Fiber outage until Monday!

Well, this is going to be a nightmare of a post.

It’s been super windy all day and we have been keeping an eye on our trampoline since the time we got up and heard the wind. We go about our business all day, then I get a call from my mom to bring the boys over and let them stay with her.

Well, we pick the boys up from the bus stop and we take them to her house to stay. I was working on their Starlink to get it working again after it had quit working the night before and was checking their speeds by connecting to my VPN and running a speedtest over it. Great speeds, I thought.

I proceeded to check it on a computer about 15 minutes later and it wouldn’t connect to the VPN and I was at a loss trying to think of a reason it wouldn’t connect. Thought maybe it switched over to Shentel for some reason because it’s the failover connection, but wasn’t sure because I had no remote access until I got home to see what was going on.

Fast forward about an hour later, and we get home and I notice that the trampoline isn’t in my yard. I then look over and see it’s on the other side of the neighbor’s driveway and my fiber is torn in two pieces. I about cried, but quickly got over it when I had to drag that thing back into my yard and dismantle it by myself.

Ended up calling Frontier the second I got home and was able to set up an appointment for Monday, so at least we will only be down for a few days, hopefully. Still have Shentel to use until it comes back up since I’ve set up failover WAN on pfSense. If packet loss gets too high, it will automatically switch to Shentel so that we don’t notice the interruption at all, and the automatically switch back to Frontier as soon as it comes back up.
