Proxmox mysterious constant 5% CPU utilization

Kept scratching my head about what could be causing my cloud Proxmox server to constantly idle at 5% CPU usage with nothing going on really.

After a bunch of digging, I realized it was a process called “systemd-udevd.service” and it was widely known that there is an issue with it consuming massive amounts of CPU.

Turned out a simple systemctl stop systemd-udevd.service did the trick! CPU is now idling around .6% to .7% even with 4 VMs and a container running. Cool! 😎👍

Up next, hopefully we can get a VM running with docker and portainer. Tempted to run docker from a Proxmox container but I think I will run into issues with privileged containers if I have an experience like before when trying it. Ah well, I’ll try it and see what happens. Might spin up a VM at the same time to have it standing by at the ready.

Hopefully I can get a Bitcoin and lightning node up and running soon. I might take advantage of my MyNode license and install it and host it on the cloud infrastructure.

Oh yeah, one more thing. I was having a lot of issues with networking. I’m guessing it’s where I’m virtualizing pfSense and then having everything else that attaches to the LAN bridge in Proxmox use the pfSense to get and IP via DHCP and have it’s traffic routed. Still a work in progress on my networking setup, but making progress!

Correction: It’s 3:16am, but I now have a Bitcoin node syncing. Should be done in 3-4 days. 🤞

4:38am. I better get to sleep!!! 🛌 😴 💤
